What is a fire blanket?

A fire blanket is a first-response fire-safety product made from fire-resistant material, normally densely woven fibreglass fabric. It is designed to extinguish a small, contained fire by completely covering the flames and restricting the supply of oxygen.

Fire blankets are commonly installed in kitchens, homes, workplaces, restaurants, schools, healthcare facilities, workshops, caravans and boats. They contain no extinguishing chemicals, propellants or pressurised components.

How does a fire blanket extinguish a fire?

A fire blanket works by completely covering the burning object or container. This restricts oxygen from reaching the flames and helps prevent burning material, hot fat or oil from spreading.

Complete coverage is essential. If flames remain exposed around the sides, the fire may continue or reignite. The blanket should remain in place until the fire source and surrounding materials have cooled.

When should I use a fire blanket instead of a fire extinguisher?

A fire blanket is particularly useful for a small fire that can be completely covered, such as a pan fire, cooking-oil fire, small appliance fire or clothing fire.

A fire extinguisher may be more appropriate when the burning area cannot be fully covered or when greater operating distance is needed. Neither product should be used when doing so would delay evacuation or require a person to move through flames, heat or dense smoke.

Are fire blankets suitable for homes?

Yes. A fire blanket is compact, easy to store and can be operated without discharging chemicals or powder into the room. It is therefore particularly suitable for domestic kitchens and other locations where small, contained fires may occur.

Household members should know where the blanket is located and should read the instructions before an emergency occurs.

Can a fire blanket be reused after a real fire?

No. A DVM fire blanket should be treated as a single-use product after deployment on an actual fire. Heat, smoke, grease, chemicals or mechanical damage may have affected the blanket even when visible damage appears limited.

After use, allow the area to cool, follow the applicable incident procedure and replace the blanket before the location is returned to normal service.

Fires & Applications

Are fire blankets suitable for Class F cooking-oil fires?

Yes. Fire blankets tested for this application are intended for small, contained Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats. The blanket must completely cover the pan or cooking appliance so that flames and hot oil remain contained.

Never pour water onto burning cooking oil. Water can instantly turn to steam and violently eject burning oil from the pan. Switch off the heat source only when this can be done safely, and leave the blanket in place until the pan has cooled fully.

Which fire types can a fire blanket be used on?

A fire blanket may be suitable for several types of small, contained fire, provided the complete burning area can be safely covered. Examples include:

  • Cooking oils and fats in pans or small appliances.
  • Clothing fires.
  • Small fires involving paper, textiles or similar materials.
  • Small appliance fires after the electrical supply is isolated.
  • Small outdoor cooking or BBQ fires under safe wind conditions.

Suitability depends on the size, location and development of the fire, not only on its formal fire classification. Never attempt to cover a spreading fire or a fire that is too large for the blanket.

Can a fire blanket be used on an electrical appliance fire?

A fire blanket may be used on a small appliance fire when the flames can be completely and safely covered. Disconnect or switch off the electrical supply first whenever this can be done without approaching the fire.

Do not touch exposed electrical components, damaged cables or the appliance itself. If the electricity cannot be isolated, or if the fire is spreading, evacuate and contact the emergency services.

Can a fire blanket be used on a gas fire?

Covering a gas flame while gas continues to escape may create an unburned gas accumulation and a serious explosion risk. The gas supply must be shut off safely before extinguishing the flame.

If the supply cannot be isolated immediately and without risk, evacuate the area and contact the emergency services or gas emergency provider.

Can a fire blanket be used for BBQ and outdoor fires?

Yes, but only when the fire is small, contained and can be completely covered. Wind may make deployment difficult and may blow flames, sparks or the blanket toward the user.

Shut off gas or another fuel source when this can be done safely. Never use a fire blanket on a large open fire or where hot coals extend beyond the blanket.

Can a fire blanket be used in a car, camper or boat?

A conventional fire blanket may be useful for a small, accessible fire involving cooking equipment, clothing or another object that can be completely covered. It is not intended to cover an entire burning vehicle.

Store the blanket in a visible and accessible position, away from the most likely fire source and without placing it behind locked or obstructed compartments.

Which size fire blanket do I need?

The correct size depends on the intended application:

  • 1 × 1 m: suitable for most domestic kitchen fires, pans, small cooking appliances and other small contained fires.
  • 1.2 × 1.8 m: offers greater coverage and is recommended where the blanket may be used for a clothing fire, larger cooking equipment or professional environments.

A blanket must be large enough to cover the complete burning area without requiring the user’s hands or body to move over exposed flames.

Is a 1 × 1 m fire blanket large enough for a kitchen?

A 1 × 1 m fire blanket is suitable for many domestic kitchen risks, including standard pans and small cooking appliances. It is compact, easy to mount and practical for rapid deployment.

For wider cooking equipment, larger commercial appliances or locations where clothing fires must also be considered, a 1.2 × 1.8 m blanket may provide more suitable coverage.

Which size is recommended for clothing and person fires?

A 1.2 × 1.8 m blanket is recommended because it provides substantially more body coverage than a 1 × 1 m blanket. The blanket should be wrapped around the person from the shoulders downward while the face and airway remain unobstructed.

Clothing fires can cause serious burns within seconds. Contact the emergency services and seek medical attention even when the flames appear to have been extinguished.

What is the difference between the bag and box versions?

The fire blanket inside is selected according to the same size and technical performance requirements. The principal difference is the packaging.

  • Bag: flexible, compact and suitable for cupboards, vehicles, mobile use and locations where space is limited.
  • Box: rigid packaging that provides additional protection and a clear wall-mounted presentation.

Choose the packaging that best matches the installation environment, visibility requirements and risk of external damage.

Safe Use

How do I use a fire blanket safely?

Follow the instructions printed on the product. In general:

  • Pull the two release tabs firmly downward.
  • Hold the blanket by the tabs and protect your hands behind it.
  • Approach only when there is a safe escape route behind you.
  • Place the blanket carefully over the complete fire.
  • Switch off the heat or power source when this can be done safely.
  • Leave the blanket in place until the fire source is fully cool.

Never throw the blanket from a distance or remove it prematurely to check whether the fire has gone out.

How do I use a fire blanket on a person?

Instruct the person to stop moving. Wrap the blanket around the body from the shoulders downward, keeping the face and airway clear. Use the blanket to smother the flames without pressing burnt clothing against the skin more than necessary.

Call the emergency services immediately. Do not remove clothing that has melted or adhered to the skin, and do not apply creams or grease to burn injuries.

When should a fire blanket not be used?

Do not attempt to deploy a fire blanket when:

  • The fire is too large to cover completely.
  • The fire has spread to surrounding cabinets, walls or ceilings.
  • You must move through flames, heavy smoke or intense heat.
  • Your escape route may be blocked.
  • A pressurised gas or fuel supply cannot be isolated.
  • You cannot identify or safely reach the source of the fire.

In these situations, evacuate immediately, close doors behind you when possible and contact the emergency services.

Why should the blanket remain in place after the flames disappear?

Hot oil, cookware and surrounding materials can remain above their ignition temperature after visible flames have disappeared. Removing the blanket too early reintroduces oxygen and may cause immediate reignition.

Leave the blanket in place until the pan, appliance or other fire source has cooled fully. Do not carry a hot pan outside.

Can incorrect use of a fire blanket cause burns?

Yes. Burns can occur if hands are placed in front of the blanket, if the user reaches over flames, if hot oil is disturbed or if the blanket is removed before the fire source has cooled.

Hold the release tabs so that the blanket shields the hands and upper body. Approach slowly and never place yourself between the fire and your only escape route.

Materials & Product Quality

What are DVM fire blankets made from?

DVM fire blankets are manufactured from densely woven fibreglass fabric. Fibreglass is non-combustible and able to retain its structure under the high temperatures encountered during small fire incidents.

The fabric construction, finished blanket dimensions, seams, pull tabs, packaging, instructions and fire performance all contribute to the suitability of the complete product.

What does a fabric weight of at least 430 g/m² mean?

GSM means grams per square metre and describes the weight of the fabric per unit of surface area. DVM specifies fire-blanket fabric of at least 430 g/m².

Fabric weight alone does not prove product performance. Fibre quality, weave density, seams, edges, pull tabs, finished dimensions and successful fire testing must also be considered. A very high or low GSM figure should never be used as the only purchasing criterion.

Are fibreglass fire blankets safe to handle?

An intact, properly packaged fire blanket can be handled safely for installation, inspection and emergency deployment. However, fibreglass fibres may irritate the skin, eyes or respiratory tract when damaged material is repeatedly unfolded, cut, abraded or handled unnecessarily.

Do not open and unfold the blanket for routine inspection unless the applicable instructions specifically require it. Replace any blanket with torn fabric, exposed fibres, damaged seams or contamination.

How can I recognise a professional-quality fire blanket?

Check more than the product’s appearance or price. A professional fire blanket should have:

  • Clear identification of the manufacturer or responsible supplier.
  • Instructions and markings appropriate for the intended market.
  • Reliable pull tabs and consistent seams.
  • Documented dimensions and material specifications.
  • Independent test documentation for the complete product.
  • Traceability, inspection guidance and replacement information.

General claims such as “fireproof,” “high temperature” or “European quality” do not replace verifiable test documentation.

EN 1869:2019 & TÜV Testing

What is EN 1869:2019?

EN 1869:2019 is the European standard for fire blankets. It contains requirements and test methods covering aspects such as dimensions, construction, deployment, fire performance, marking and information supplied with the product.

Buyers should evaluate the complete product against the applicable requirements rather than relying only on a fabric specification or general statement of heat resistance.

Were DVM fire blankets independently tested by TÜV SÜD?

Yes. The DVM 1 × 1 m fire blanket series was independently tested by TÜV SÜD under controlled test conditions. The documentation includes the official test report and videos showing actual fire-performance testing.

Independent third-party testing provides purchasers with verifiable evidence beyond general product descriptions or supplier declarations.

Which fire tests are shown in the TÜV documentation?

The TÜV documentation includes a cooking-oil fire test and a heptane fire test. These tests provide evidence of how the tested DVM 1 × 1 m fire blanket series performed under the controlled conditions described in the report.

The videos show actual fire-test procedures and should be considered together with the written report, including its test setup, scope and reported results.

Can I view or download the official TÜV test report?

Why is independent fire-blanket testing important?

Independent testing provides objective evidence for consumers, distributors, safety managers and procurement teams. It helps verify whether the tested product performs under defined conditions and distinguishes documented products from those supported only by marketing claims.

Professional buyers should also verify that the tested sample can be traced to the product being supplied and that the report covers the relevant size, design and construction.

What is the European Fire Blanket Reference Specification?

EN 1869:2019 remains the applicable European fire-blanket product standard. The European Fire Blanket Reference Specification provides an additional procurement-oriented framework for comparing product documentation, construction, testing, traceability and supplier evidence.

It is intended to support structured professional evaluation and does not replace EN 1869:2019.

Inspection, Storage & Replacement

How often should a fire blanket be inspected?

DVM recommends a documented visual inspection at least once every year. More frequent checks may be appropriate in professional, public, mobile or high-risk environments.

The inspection should confirm that the blanket is present, clearly visible, accessible, securely mounted and free from obvious damage, moisture, contamination or unauthorised use.

Should the fire blanket be unfolded during routine inspection?

No. Routine inspection should normally be performed without removing and fully unfolding the blanket. Unnecessary handling can damage the packaging, disturb the folding arrangement or expose fibreglass fibres.

Check the visible parts of the blanket, pull tabs, packaging, mounting and labels. If damage or contamination is suspected, remove the product from service and replace or assess it according to the applicable instructions.

Where should a fire blanket be installed?

Install the blanket in a clearly visible and easily accessible location near the relevant fire risk, but not so close that a person would need to move toward the fire to reach it.

In a kitchen, this usually means near an exit or doorway rather than directly above the cooker. Do not hide the blanket inside a cupboard behind the most likely fire source.

How long can an unused DVM fire blanket remain in service?

DVM provides a 10-year warranty, subject to the applicable warranty terms and correct storage, inspection and handling. The blanket should nevertheless be replaced immediately after use, or earlier when the product, packaging, pull tabs, seams or visible fabric are damaged or contaminated.

The warranty period does not remove the need for annual inspection or guarantee that a poorly stored or damaged blanket remains suitable for use.

When must a fire blanket be replaced?

Replace the blanket:

  • Immediately after deployment on a real fire.
  • When fabric, seams or pull tabs are damaged.
  • After contamination by oil, chemicals, moisture or dirt.
  • When the packaging no longer protects or releases the blanket correctly.
  • When labels or instructions are no longer readable.
  • When its history or condition is uncertain.
How should a used or damaged fire blanket be disposed of?

Allow the blanket and any fire residues to cool completely. Handle contaminated material carefully and follow local waste-disposal rules and any workplace incident procedures.

Fibreglass fire blankets are generally not suitable for ordinary textile recycling. A blanket contaminated by fire residues, oil or chemicals may require a different disposal method from an unused, clean product.
