How Fire Blankets Work and When to Use Them Safely

A conventional fire blanket is one of the simplest first-response fire-safety products, but it is effective only when it is used for the right type and size of fire. Understanding how a fire blanket works, what it can do and where its limitations begin is essential for safe use.

This guide explains the operating principle of conventional fire blankets, the situations in which they can be useful, when evacuation is the safer action, and the role of product standards such as EN 1869:2019.


What is a fire blanket?

A conventional fire blanket is a specially designed flexible sheet made from fire-resistant material, commonly densely woven fiberglass fabric. It is stored in a bag or rigid box so that it can be removed quickly and placed over a small fire.

Unlike a fire extinguisher, a fire blanket does not discharge powder, foam, water or another extinguishing agent. Instead, it forms a physical barrier around the burning area and restricts the supply of oxygen.

This makes a conventional fire blanket particularly relevant to small, contained fires that can be covered completely, including many cooking-oil and pan fires and some small textile or appliance fires.

How does a fire blanket work?

Fire requires three basic elements to continue burning: heat, fuel and oxygen. This is commonly described as the fire triangle.

When a fire blanket is placed correctly over a small fire:

  • the blanket separates the burning material from the surrounding air;
  • the oxygen supply to the flames is restricted;
  • the flames are suppressed; and
  • the fire may extinguish as available oxygen beneath the blanket is depleted.

The blanket also forms a heat-resistant barrier between the user and the flames during deployment. However, it does not cool the fire in the way that water or another cooling extinguishing agent can.

This is why the blanket must remain in place until the pan, appliance or burning object has cooled sufficiently. Removing it too early may allow fresh oxygen to reach hot material and cause re-ignition.


When should you use a fire blanket?

A conventional fire blanket is intended for a small, contained and fully coverable fire.

Typical examples may include:

  • a small pan fire involving cooking oil or fat;
  • a compact cooking-appliance fire;
  • a small burning textile or other Class A object;
  • a clothing fire where a sufficiently large blanket is available; and
  • a small electrical appliance fire after the electrical supply has been isolated where safely possible.

The decisive factor is not simply the name or fire class. The fire must still be small enough to cover completely, the blanket must be accessible and the user must be able to approach without losing a safe escape route.

When should you NOT use a fire blanket?

A conventional fire blanket is not suitable for every fire. Do not attempt blanket deployment when:

  • the fire is larger than the blanket;
  • the burning area cannot be covered completely;
  • the fire is spreading rapidly;
  • flames have reached walls, cabinets, ceilings or structural elements;
  • dense smoke or intense heat prevents safe access;
  • your escape route may be compromised;
  • flammable liquid is leaking or spreading;
  • flammable gas is involved;
  • combustible metals or reactive chemicals are burning;
  • a pressurised container may rupture; or
  • a developed lithium-ion battery or vehicle fire is involved.

In these situations, evacuate, close doors behind you where possible and contact the emergency services. A fire blanket is first-response equipment for a limited fire — not a reason to remain in an unsafe environment.


How do you use a fire blanket safely?

Correct deployment is as important as choosing the right situation. The basic principles are:

  1. keep a clear escape route behind you;
  2. switch off the heat or power source only when it is safe to do so;
  3. pull the release tabs and remove the blanket completely;
  4. protect your hands behind the upper edge of the blanket;
  5. keep the blanket between your body and the fire;
  6. place it gently over the complete burning area;
  7. do not throw it or disturb burning oil; and
  8. leave it in place until the fire source has cooled fully.

Why are fire blankets particularly useful for cooking-oil fires?

A small, contained cooking-oil or fat fire is one of the principal applications of a properly tested conventional fire blanket.

The blanket can cover the pan without adding an extinguishing agent that may disturb the burning oil. Never pour water onto burning cooking oil or fat. Water can turn rapidly to steam and eject burning oil from the pan.

For a pan fire:

  • do not move the pan;
  • switch off the heat only when it is safe;
  • place the blanket gently over the entire pan; and
  • leave it covered until the pan and oil have cooled completely.

Can a fire blanket be used on clothing fires?

Yes, a sufficiently large conventional fire blanket can assist with a clothing fire when another person can deploy it safely. However, the first instruction when clothing catches fire is stop, drop and roll.

The assisting person may then use the blanket to help smother remaining flames while keeping the person's face, mouth and nose clear. After the flames have been extinguished, appropriate burn cooling and urgent medical assessment are important.

What about electrical appliance fires?

Electricity is not a separate formal fire class in the European classification system, but live electrical equipment introduces additional shock and arc hazards.

A conventional fire blanket may be considered for a small appliance fire only when the fire remains fully coverable and the electrical supply has been isolated wherever safely possible. Do not touch damaged wiring or exposed live components.

If the power cannot be isolated, the fire has spread beyond the appliance or smoke and heat are increasing, evacuate immediately.

Which fire classes can a fire blanket be used on?

Fire-class terminology is not identical worldwide. Under the European system, conventional fire blankets are particularly relevant to small Class F cooking-oil and fat fires and can assist with some small Class A solid-material or textile fires when complete coverage is possible.

They should not be relied upon for Class C gas fires, Class D combustible-metal fires, spreading flammable-liquid fires or other specialist hazards.

Fire blanket vs fire extinguisher

A fire blanket and a fire extinguisher use different extinguishing principles and should not automatically be viewed as alternatives. In many homes and workplaces, they complement each other.

  • A fire blanket is intended for a small, contained fire that can be approached and covered completely.
  • A fire extinguisher applies an extinguishing agent selected for the relevant fire type and generally allows greater operating distance.

An extinguisher is not automatically the correct choice for a larger or developing fire. The correct agent, fire type, user competence and safe escape conditions all matter.

Are fire blankets reusable?

A conventional fire blanket should be treated as a single-use safety product after deployment on an actual fire.

Exposure to flames, hot oil, smoke, contamination and high temperatures may affect the blanket even when damage is not immediately visible. After an actual fire incident, replace the blanket rather than folding it back into its container for future emergency use.

A blanket that has only been removed for inspection or demonstration, without exposure to fire or contamination, may be returned to service if it remains undamaged and can be repacked correctly in accordance with the product instructions.


What does EN 1869:2019 tell us?

EN 1869:2019 is the established European product standard for conventional fire blankets. It defines requirements and test methods used to assess important aspects of product performance, construction, marking and instructions.

For purchasers outside Europe, EN 1869:2019 can also provide a useful technical procurement benchmark where no equivalent national fire-blanket product standard is specified. However, it is not automatically a legal requirement worldwide, and local fire-safety and product rules must still be checked.

What size fire blanket should you choose?

The blanket must be large enough to cover the expected fire completely while remaining manageable for the intended user.

A 1 × 1 m fire blanket is compact and suitable for many standard domestic pans and small appliance risks. A 1.2 × 1.8 m fire blanket provides substantially greater surface area and is the preferred DVM size where wider equipment or clothing-fire preparedness requires more coverage.

Conventional Fire Blankets and Fire Limitation Blankets are different products

The products discussed in this guide are conventional fire blankets for small, contained fires.

A Fire Limitation Blanket (FLB) is a much larger specialist product intended for professional vehicle-fire scenarios, including electric vehicles. It can help limit flames, heat, smoke and contamination around a vehicle incident, but it does not stop thermal runaway inside an EV battery.

A Fire Limitation Blanket is therefore not simply an oversized conventional fire blanket. The two product categories have different applications, dimensions, deployment methods and technical requirements.


Installation, inspection and replacement

A fire blanket should be installed where it is clearly visible and immediately accessible, but not so close to the expected fire source that the user would have to move towards the fire to reach it.

Professional environments should include fire blankets in their documented safety-equipment inspection procedures. DVM recommends a documented visual inspection at least once a year, with replacement after actual fire deployment or when the packaging, blanket or release mechanism is damaged or contaminated.

Summary: how fire blankets work

A conventional fire blanket works by covering a small fire and restricting the oxygen available to the flames. Its effectiveness depends on using it for the right fire, selecting an adequate blanket size and deploying it correctly.

A fire blanket is most appropriate when:

  • the fire is small and contained;
  • the complete burning area can be covered;
  • the blanket can be reached safely;
  • the user has a clear escape route; and
  • the fire type is suitable for blanket intervention.

If those conditions are not met, evacuation is the correct response. Understanding this limitation is just as important as knowing how to deploy the blanket.
