Which fire blanket size is best for a kitchen?

Choose the right size for your kitchen

Safety Bag — compact and flexible
The flexible bag is suitable where compact storage is important. It can be wall mounted or kept in another clearly marked and immediately accessible position.
Do not hide the blanket in a drawer or cupboard behind the cooker. It should be reachable without moving toward the likely fire source.

How to use a fire blanket on a pan fire
- Raise the alarm and make sure a clear escape route remains behind you.
- Switch off the cooker or heat source only if this can be done safely.
- Pull the two release tabs firmly downward.
- Hold the blanket so that it shields your hands and upper body.
- Approach carefully without reaching over exposed flames.
- Place the blanket gently over the entire pan or appliance.
- Leave it in place until the pan, oil and surrounding area have cooled fully.
Do not throw the blanket from a distance, because this can disturb the pan or spread burning oil. Never lift the blanket prematurely to check whether the flames have gone out.
Do not attempt to carry a burning or recently extinguished pan outside. Movement may spill hot oil or reintroduce oxygen to the fire.

Can a fire blanket be used on an appliance fire?
A fire blanket may be suitable for a small appliance fire when the complete burning area can be reached and safely covered. Disconnect the electrical supply first whenever this can be done without approaching the fire.
Do not touch the appliance, damaged wiring or exposed electrical components. If the power cannot be isolated, if smoke is increasing or if the fire has spread into kitchen units or walls, evacuate and contact the emergency services.

What if clothing catches fire while cooking?
If clothing catches fire, the person should stop, drop and roll. Another person may use a sufficiently large fire blanket to help smother the flames when this can be done safely.
Within the DVM range, the 1.2 × 1.8 m blanket provides substantially more body coverage than the 1 × 1 m model and is therefore the preferred DVM size where clothing-fire protection is an identified risk.
Keep the person’s face and airway clear. Call the emergency services and cool the burn with cool running water for at least 20 minutes where possible. Do not remove clothing that has melted or adhered to the skin.

When should you not use a fire blanket?
Do not attempt to deploy a fire blanket when:
- The fire is too large to cover completely.
- Flames have spread to cabinets, walls, ceilings or extraction equipment.
- You must move through flames, dense smoke or intense heat.
- Your escape route may become blocked.
- A gas supply cannot be shut off safely.
- The fire source cannot be safely identified or reached.
In these situations, evacuate immediately, close doors behind you where possible and contact the emergency services.
European fire-blanket standard and product quality
DVM fire blankets are manufactured from densely woven fibreglass fabric of at least 430 g/m² and are designed for use in accordance with EN 1869:2019.
Fabric weight alone does not prove performance. The complete product must also be evaluated, including its dimensions, weave, seams, pull tabs, packaging, deployment, markings, instructions and documented fire performance.

Inspection and replacement
DVM recommends a documented visual inspection at least once every year. The blanket should remain visible, accessible, correctly mounted and free from moisture, contamination or obvious damage.
Routine inspection should normally be carried out without fully unfolding the blanket. Replace it immediately after deployment on a real fire, or if the fabric, seams, tabs, packaging or instructions are damaged.
