For conventional fire blankets, EN 1869:2019 provides a comprehensive and widely relevant technical benchmark. Although it originates as a European standard, its clearly defined performance requirements also make it useful for distributors, OEM customers and professional purchasers in markets where no equivalent national fire-blanket product standard applies.

What is EN 1869:2019?

EN 1869:2019 is the European product standard specifically developed for fire blankets intended for use by one person to control small fires.

Rather than simply describing what a fire blanket should look like, the standard establishes performance and safety requirements that allow products to be evaluated under defined test conditions.

For buyers, this is important. A statement such as “fire resistant”, “fiberglass fire blanket” or “high temperature blanket” does not by itself demonstrate that a finished fire blanket performs as required during an actual fire.

Why EN 1869:2019 matters outside Europe

Fire blankets are sold worldwide, but national regulatory frameworks differ considerably. Not every country has its own dedicated product standard for conventional fire blankets.

Is there a US equivalent to EN 1869:2019?

The United States has an extensive system of fire-safety standards, codes and certification requirements, including standards developed or used by organisations such as NFPA, UL and ASTM.

However, these should not automatically be treated as direct equivalents to EN 1869:2019. Standards for portable fire extinguishers, building materials or other fire-protection products address different products and test methods.

For international purchasers, the important question is therefore not simply whether a product carries a familiar national name or mark, but which specific standard the finished fire blanket has actually been tested against.

Compliance is more than a statement on the packaging

A manufacturer or seller can print “EN 1869” on packaging, a website or a technical data sheet. That statement alone does not prove that the finished product has successfully passed the required tests.

Professional buyers should therefore ask for supporting documentation and verify that it relates to the actual product being purchased.

Important questions include:

  • Which edition of the standard was used?
  • Was the finished fire blanket tested, rather than only the raw fabric?
  • Which blanket size and construction were tested?
  • Which independent laboratory performed the testing?
  • Is the test report traceable to the product being supplied?

Common fire blanket compliance mistakes

One of the most common procurement mistakes is assuming that a material test automatically demonstrates compliance of the finished fire blanket.

A fiberglass fabric may have excellent heat-resistant properties, but the performance of a complete fire blanket also depends on its construction, dimensions, edges, pull tabs, packaging and ability to perform during the prescribed fire test.

Other warning signs can include outdated references to earlier editions of a standard, incomplete documentation, unclear product identification or test reports covering a different product from the one being offered.

For professional procurement, traceability between product, specification and test documentation is therefore essential.

Why some fire blankets may fail EN 1869:2019

Two products that look almost identical can perform very differently during fire testing.

Differences in fabric construction, coating, material weight, stitching, dimensions and overall manufacturing consistency can influence performance.

This is why visual appearance alone is a poor basis for evaluating a safety product. A low-cost fire blanket should not automatically be assumed to provide the same performance as a product supported by documented testing.

Does fiberglass GSM matter?

GSM – grams per square metre – indicates the mass of the fabric per unit area. It can be a useful specification when comparing fiberglass fire blankets because it provides information about the physical construction of the material.

However, GSM alone does not prove fire performance or compliance.

A heavier fabric is not automatically compliant, just as a lighter fabric is not automatically non-compliant. Material weight should therefore be considered together with construction, test performance and technical documentation.

DVM specifies fiberglass fabric of at least 430 g/m² for its conventional fire blankets. This provides professional purchasers with a clear and measurable material specification in addition to the applicable fire-performance documentation.

Testing, certification and compliance: what is the difference?

Certification generally adds independent third-party confirmation under a defined certification or conformity-assessment process.
