These guidelines provide a structured approach to the periodic visual inspection, documentation and replacement of fire blankets. They are intended for professional users, facility managers, fire-safety organisations, distributors, OEM customers, private-label partners and other parties responsible for keeping fire blankets ready for emergency use.
Fire blankets are emergency safety products that may remain installed and unused for many years. Periodic visual inspection helps confirm that the product remains identifiable, accessible, correctly stored and ready for immediate deployment.
DVM recommends a documented visual inspection at least once every year. More frequent inspection may be appropriate where the product is exposed to demanding environmental conditions, frequent handling, contamination, vibration, moisture, heat or other foreseeable risks.

DVM Fire Blanket Inspection Guidelines
Technical basis:
DVM inspection guidance informed by EN 1869:2019 product principles
Purpose:
Periodic visual inspection, record keeping and replacement assessment
These guidelines form part of the DVM Fire Blanket Reference and have been developed by DVM International B.V. for professional inspection and documentation purposes.
They are not an EN, CEN, ISO or government-issued inspection standard and do not replace EN 1869:2019, applicable legislation, local fire-safety procedures, site risk assessments or the manufacturer’s product instructions.
A fire blanket is not normally maintained, repaired or refurbished. Periodic activity consists primarily of visual inspection, verification of accessibility and documentation of the product’s condition.
If the blanket, packaging, pull tabs, instructions or traceability are compromised, the appropriate action is normally replacement rather than repair.
1. Why Periodic Inspection Matters
Fire blankets are frequently installed in kitchens, workshops, offices, hospitality locations, public buildings, vehicles and other environments where they may remain unused for a long period.
During that time, normal activity, environmental exposure, unauthorised handling or changes to the installation area may affect the product or its readiness for use.
A documented periodic visual inspection helps verify that:
- the fire blanket remains clearly visible and immediately accessible;
- the bag or rigid box remains undamaged and securely mounted;
- the pull tabs, straps or release elements are present and intact;
- operating instructions, product identification and safety markings remain readable;
- the product has not been exposed to moisture, oil, chemicals, dirt, excessive heat or other contamination;
- accessible fabric, seams and edges show no visible signs of damage;
- the product has not been deployed, opened or handled without authorisation;
- the product remains suitable for the identified fire risk and installation location;
- the inspection status and product history remain traceable.
A damaged, contaminated, untraceable or incorrectly stored fire blanket should not be relied upon during an emergency.
2. Recommended Inspection Frequency
DVM recommends a documented visual inspection at least once every year.
A shorter inspection interval may be appropriate in:
- commercial kitchens;
- industrial or workshop environments;
- public buildings;
- schools, hospitals and care facilities;
- mobile or vehicle-based installations;
- outdoor or semi-outdoor locations;
- humid, dusty, oily or chemically exposed environments;
- locations where equipment is frequently handled or obstructed;
- high-risk or high-occupancy premises.
The final inspection interval should reflect:
- the site fire-risk assessment;
- the installation environment;
- the organisation’s fire-safety procedures;
- applicable local requirements;
- the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Inspection Method
Routine inspection should normally be performed without removing and fully unfolding the fire blanket.
Unnecessary removal and unfolding may:
- disturb the documented folding arrangement;
- affect rapid deployment from the bag or box;
- damage the packaging or pull tabs;
- introduce dirt, oil, moisture or other contamination;
- cause unnecessary exposure to fibreglass fibres;
- make correct repacking difficult to verify.
The inspector should use a visual and documentary approach and should only handle the product to the extent necessary to assess accessible components.
Routine inspection should not involve repeatedly unfolding, shaking, cutting, rubbing or abrading the blanket material.
A blanket that has been fully removed or unfolded without a controlled procedure should only be returned to service where the responsible organisation can verify correct condition, folding and deployment configuration. Where this cannot be established, replacement is the safer option.
4. Inspection Points
The inspection should cover the following areas.
4.1 Location and Accessibility
- Is the fire blanket installed in its designated location?
- Is it clearly visible and identifiable?
- Can it be reached immediately without moving toward the fire risk?
- Is access free from furniture, equipment, stored materials or other obstructions?
- Is the installation location still appropriate for the identified risk?
4.2 Mounting
- Is the bag or box mounted securely?
- Are hooks, screws, brackets or other mounting components intact?
- Is the product positioned correctly for removal?
- Has the mounting height or surrounding layout changed?
- Can the pull tabs be reached and operated without obstruction?
4.3 Bag or Rigid Box
- Is the packaging intact and properly closed?
- Are there tears, cracks, deformation, corrosion or impact damage?
- Does the packaging still protect the blanket against foreseeable contamination?
- Are there signs that the product has been opened or tampered with?
- Does the packaging still support the intended extraction method?
4.4 Pull Tabs and Release Elements
- Are all pull tabs, straps or release elements present?
- Are they undamaged and securely attached?
- Are they clearly visible and unobstructed?
- Is there evidence of fraying, tearing, stretching or contamination?
- Can the intended removal direction be understood from the product presentation?
4.5 Instructions and Markings
- Are the operating instructions readable?
- Are required pictograms visible?
- Is the product name clearly identifiable?
- Are the blanket dimensions readable?
- Is the model or product identification readable?
- Is the batch number or other traceability information available?
- Are instructions supplied in the language or languages required for the installation location?
- Are discard-after-use and inspection instructions visible where applicable?
4.6 Accessible Blanket Material
Inspect only areas of the blanket that are accessible without unnecessary unfolding or disturbance.
Check for:
- tears, cuts or punctures;
- frayed edges or seams;
- loose fibres or visible abrasion;
- discolouration associated with heat exposure;
- oil, grease, chemical, dirt or moisture contamination;
- mould, odour or evidence of prolonged damp conditions;
- signs of previous deployment or unauthorised handling.
4.7 Product Suitability
- Does the blanket size remain appropriate for the identified application?
- Has the fire risk or equipment layout changed since installation?
- Is the product still intended for the type of fire risk present?
- Is a 1.2 × 1.8 m blanket provided where clothing-fire intervention is part of the intended positioning within the DVM Fire Blanket Reference?
- Is the fire blanket being incorrectly relied upon for applications outside its documented intended use?

6. Installation and Storage Conditions
A fire blanket should be installed in a clearly visible and easily accessible location near the identified fire risk, but not so close that a person would need to move toward the fire to reach it.
In a kitchen, this commonly means near an exit or doorway rather than directly above, beside or behind the cooking appliance.
The fire blanket should not be:
- hidden in a drawer or cupboard;
- stored in a locked compartment;
- covered by furniture, equipment or decorations;
- positioned where heat, steam, grease or water routinely reaches it;
- installed where a developing fire could block access;
- used as a general cloth, heat shield or protective cover.
The installation position should be known to employees, occupants or other intended users.
7. Replacement Criteria
A fire blanket should be removed from service and replaced when:
- it has been deployed on an actual fire;
- its service history is unknown or unreliable;
- the blanket, seams, edges or pull tabs show visible damage;
- the bag or box no longer protects or releases the blanket correctly;
- operating instructions, product identification or safety markings are missing or illegible;
- the product has been contaminated by oil, grease, chemicals, moisture, dirt or fire residues;
- it has been exposed to excessive heat or unsuitable storage conditions;
- the folding or deployment configuration can no longer be verified;
- the mounting is damaged and secure installation cannot be restored;
- product or batch traceability has been lost;
- the product size or intended use is no longer suitable for the identified risk;
- its condition or reliability is otherwise uncertain.
A fire blanket deployed on an actual fire must be treated as a single-use safety product.
Heat, smoke, grease, chemicals and mechanical stress may affect the material even when visible damage appears limited. The blanket should not be cleaned, repaired, refolded and returned to service after an actual fire.
8. Service Life and Warranty
DVM fire blankets are supplied with a 10-year warranty, subject to the applicable warranty terms and correct storage, periodic inspection and appropriate handling.
The warranty period:
- does not replace periodic inspection;
- does not guarantee a fixed operational life under all conditions;
- does not justify retaining a damaged or contaminated product;
- does not apply after deployment on an actual fire;
- does not remove the need for earlier replacement where reliability is uncertain.
The installation date, product model and batch identification should be recorded so that inspection history and applicable warranty information can be verified.
9. Inspection Records
In professional environments, each inspection should be documented.
The inspection record should identify:
- organisation and site;
- building, room or installation location;
- product name and model;
- blanket dimensions;
- bag or box configuration;
- batch number or other traceability information;
- installation date where known;
- inspection date;
- name or role of the inspector;
- condition of the installation and product;
- identified defects or nonconformities;
- corrective actions taken;
- replacement decision where applicable;
- next planned inspection date.
Records should be retained in accordance with the organisation’s fire-safety, quality-management and document-retention procedures.
10. Inspection Result Categories
A practical inspection record may use the following result categories:
- Pass: the product remains correctly installed, accessible, identifiable and free from visible defects.
- Corrective action required: the product itself appears suitable, but an installation issue such as an obstruction, unsuitable mounting or missing location marking must be corrected.
- Further assessment required: the product condition, history, documentation or suitability cannot be determined conclusively.
- Replace: the product is damaged, contaminated, deployed, untraceable or otherwise unsuitable for continued service.
11. Responsibilities
The organisation responsible for the installation should define:
- who performs the inspection;
- the required inspection interval;
- the inspection method and record format;
- how defects are reported and corrected;
- who may authorise replacement;
- how replacement products are identified and installed;
- how inspection and replacement records are retained.
Inspectors should be familiar with:
- the intended use of the fire blanket;
- the product instructions;
- the installation environment;
- the relevant fire-safety procedures;
- the replacement criteria contained in these guidelines.
