Fire blankets are commonly supplied in either a soft bag or a rigid box. The fire blanket itself can have the same technical specification; the difference is primarily in storage, presentation and installation.
A bag is lightweight, compact and practical for homes, vehicles, boats and many professional locations. It is also convenient where larger quantities need to be transported or stored.
A rigid box provides a more permanent appearance and can be particularly attractive in offices, commercial buildings, public areas and other fixed installations.
Neither format is inherently safer simply because of the packaging. The important factors are that the blanket can be deployed quickly, the pull tabs remain accessible and the container is mounted in an appropriate location.
Which material should a fire blanket be made from?
Many modern fire blankets use woven fiberglass fabric because of its heat resistance and dimensional stability.
However, the description “fiberglass fire blanket” alone says relatively little about the actual construction. Fabric weight, weave, finishing and manufacturing consistency can vary.
One useful specification is GSM – grams per square metre – which indicates the mass of the fabric per unit area.
DVM specifies fiberglass fabric of at least 430 g/m² for its conventional fire blankets. This gives buyers a clear, measurable material specification rather than relying only on a generic material description.
GSM should nevertheless never be used as the sole measure of performance. A finished fire blanket should also be supported by appropriate fire-performance testing.
Which fire blanket standard should you look for?
For conventional fire blankets, EN 1869:2019 provides a comprehensive product standard with defined requirements and test methods.
For European buyers it is the established product standard. For professional purchasers elsewhere in the world, EN 1869:2019 can also provide a useful technical procurement benchmark where no equivalent national fire-blanket standard is specified.
Buyers should not rely solely on the words “EN 1869” printed on a product or website. Ask what was actually tested, which edition of the standard was used and whether the documentation relates to the finished product being supplied.
